Romancing the Stone...haven

By Kelly McAlpine

Romance isn’t just in the air at Dalriada Luxury Lodges – sometimes it’s written in the skies.

Dark winter skies offer the best chance of seeing the incredible lights phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis. Set on an elevated spot, Dalriada’s eight stylish lodges have picture windows providing a wide vista looking out over the sea, ideal for couples hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

With over 260 castles, Aberdeenshire is well named Scotland’s castle country and one of the most dramatic is a short hop from Dalriada Lodges. The ruins of Dunnottar Castle, perched on the edge of the sea, is an iconic destination. Steeped in history, it’s said to be haunted so stay close to your loved one as you explore its nooks and crannies and marvel at the breath taking views.

The pretty pink castle that is said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella is a short drive from Dalriada, at Craigievar, near Alford. While the castle is open seasonally, its grounds are open all year round offering the perfect excuse to go exploring hand in hand.

Dalriada’s five-star self-catering lodges have fully equipped designer kitchens, should you fancy conjuring up the recipe of love by serving up a romantic meal. Or, for something a little bit quirky, wander into Stonehaven and try one of Britain’s best eating experiences - the award-winning Bay Fish and Chips. Sharing locally caught fish and chips with a squeeze of lemon, on the seafront is the height of true love!

For a romantic night in, draw the curtains, dim the lights and snuggle up on the generous sofas watching a movie together on the large screen smart television, with a steady supply of your favourite foodie treats.

Who doesn’t love retail therapy? The journey from Stonehaven to Aberdeen takes less than 20 minutes by train and the city has an amazing array of shops from interesting independents to the well-known high street names. Take the train and you’ll alight at Aberdeen Station close to Union Square, a shopping centre which boasts a cinema and a range of different eateries.

There are lots of great things to do and see in Aberdeen, however the quaint buildings of the old fishing village of Footdee (pronounced Fittie) provide the perfect backdrop for a gorgeous couple selfie.

Dalriada Luxury Lodges make for a great choice to spark the embers of romance for Valentine couples, and guests can add a wide range of packages to their stay, including local food, cycle hire and a free round of golf.
